Some Names of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسـلم) (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was chosen by Allah as the choicest quintessence and finest among His creation, and since Allah revealed this to the Prophet to inform us as definite knowledge, without pride or conceit the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

إنَّ اللهَ اصطفى كِنانَةَ مِن ولدِ إسماعيل، واصطفى قريشاً من كِنَانَة، واصطفى مِن قريشٍ بَنِي هاشِم، واصطفانِي مِن بَنِي هاشِم

“Indeed, Allah chose Kinaanah from the sons of Isma`eel, and He chose Quraish from Kinaanah, and He chose Banu Haashim from Quraish, and from Bani Haashim and He chose me.” [Reported by Muslim # 2276]

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has many names that inform us about his outstanding traits, and of these names is when he said:

( أنا محمد و أحمد و المقفي و الحاشر و نبي التوبة و نبي الرحمة)

“I am Muhammad, and Ahmad (the praised one), and ‘al-Muqaffi’ (the last and final Prophet); and I am al-Hashir (one of resurrection); and the Prophet of Repentance, and the Prophet of Mercy.”  [Reported by Muslim, and Ahmad.] And he said peace and blessings be upon him:

إن لي أسماء : أنا محمد وأنا أحمد وأنا الماحي الذي يمحو الله بي الكفر وأنا الحاشر

الذي يحشر الناس على قدمي وأنا العاقب

I have names, I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmad, and I am al-Maahi by whom Allah effaces disbelief, and I am al-Hashir after whom all the people will be resurrected after me, and i am al-Aqib (last one).”   [Reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others]

  1. Muhammad (  محمد) This name is from the verb HAMADA ( حمد) to praise, and from the noun HAMD (praise), and is the passive participle of the word, meaning, the praiseworthy one.
  2. Ahmad (  أحمد) This name is also is from the verb HAMADA ( حمد) and from the noun HAMD (praise), and indicates that he is the most praiseworthy one, the one worthy of much praise.
  3. Al-Muqaffi (  المقفي), meaning, the last and final Prophet.
  4. Al-Hashir ( الحاشر  ) This name means that he will be the first one to be resurrected and thus all others will be resurrected after him, so it is as if he is the cause for their resurrection.
  5. Nabiy-ul-Tauba ( نبي التوبة  ), the Prophet of Repentance, for he calls us all to repent sincerely to Allah.
  6. Nabiy-ur-Rahmah ( نبي الرحمة), Prophet of Mercy. This name is mentioned repeatedly, and from this we have the saying of Allah in Surat al-Anbiya`a (Chapter of the Prophets: 21 :

﴾ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ ﴿

And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the universe..”

And the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him, said:( “… وإنما بعثت رحمة”) “… and verily I was only sent as a mercy.”

  1. Nabiy-ul-Malhamah, (نبي الملحمة), which means the Prophet of Great Battles.  This name indicates those Great Battles that will occur at the end of times. [The narration which includes “Nabiyul-Malhama” as a name is reported by Ahmad # 19543 and Ibn Habban # 6314and declared authentic by the verifier Sheikh al-Arna`ut, and al-Albani in Sahih al-Jame’e no.1473].
  2. Al-Maahi: (الماحي), the destroyer, the effacer of disbelief, since he conquered over idolatry and disbelief as above

9.      Al-Aqib ( العاقب), the one who has no one after him, meaning no prophet or messenger from Allah after him since he is the final and last Prophet and Messenger from Allah for mankind.

10.  Al-Mutawakkil: (The One who puts his trust in Allaah). In the Sahih of Bukhari from the narration of Abdullah Ibn Amru, may Allah be pleased with him, who was asked about the trait of the Prophet in the Torah and said:

“I found the description of the Prophet peace and blessing be upon him, in the Torah as it is in the Quran: (O Prophet, I have sent you a witness and giver of glad tidings and warner) and to protect the unlettered and illiterate ones; You are My Servant and My Messenger, I have called you “al-Mutawakkil” He is neither rude nor harsh and he does not shout in the markets, and he does not return an evil for an evil, rather he overlooks and forgives. And I will not make him to die until I make firm the nation through him, causing them to say: there is none worthy of worship except Allah.” [Reported by al-Bukhari and others]
