Jesus’ return in the Quran, peace be upon him

Although there are numerous verses of the Qur`an dealing with Jesus Christ, peace be upon him, his birth by virgin mother Mary, may Allah bless her, and his life as the Messenger of Allah, there are no explicit texts that clearly mention his second coming. Nevertheless there is a verse which states that he is a “sign” (alam) of the Day of Resurrection. This is the definite indication of his second coming which is mentioned in detail and confirmed in the Sunnah.

Allah the Most Exalted and Majestic said:

“And when the son of Mary is cited as an example, your people laughed aloud (in ridicule). * And they say, ‘Are your gods better, or he?’  They did not make this comparison except for argument’s sake. Nay, but they are an argumentative people. * He (Jesus) was only a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel. * And if We willed, We could have made angels upon the earth succeeding one another. *  And indeed he (Jesus) will be a sign for the Hour, so be not in doubt of it, and follow Me. This is a straight path. * And never let Satan avert you.  Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. * And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, ‘I have come to you with wisdom and to make clear to you some of that in which you differ, so fear Allah and obey me. * Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him.  This is a straight path.’ * But the factions from among them differed and woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day. * Are they waiting except for the Hour to come upon them suddenly while they perceive not? On that Day close friends will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous.” [Surat-az-Zukhruf: 43:57-67]

The crucial saying is the statement (وَإِنَّهُ لَعِلْمٌ لِلسَّاعَةِ) since this means “and indeed he (Jesus) will be a sign for the Hour.”  This is reconfirmed in many prophetic statements of the Messenger of Allah peace and blessings be upon him, and sayings of the companions in the books of Quranic exegesis. We will mention some of these narrations in the section about the Sunnah below.

Of course these verses are in the context of an important message, of which the central theme is that only Allah deserves worship and that Jesus like all the other prophets, was a worshipper of Allah – Glory be to Allah the One God, Lord, Master and Owner of the heavens and earth and all within them. And Allah also says in this chapter:

“Say, ‘If the Most Merciful had a son then I would be the first of worshippers.’ * Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, high above what they describe (to Him in blasphemy). * Leave them to talk vainly and to play until they meet their Day of which they are promised. * And it is He (Allah) who is (the only) deity in the heaven, and (the only) deity on the earth.  And He is the All Wise, the All Knowing. * Blessed is He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. With Him (alone) is knowledge of the Hour and to Him (alone) you will be returned. * Those whom they supplicate besides Him do not possess any intercession; except only those who testify to the truth and they know. * And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say, ‘Allah.’  So how are they deluded?” [Surat-az-Zukhruf: 43: 80-86]

These verses and many like them explain that Allah is the only God and there is no god worthy of worship and adoration except Him, and that Jesus, Muhammad and all the other prophets, peace be upon them, all worshiped Him and called others away from any idolatry to the sincere worship of Allah. If people worship a prophet or saint believing that they have the power of sacred “intersession” then this

Another verse with a possible indication to the second coming is the saying of Allah the Most Exalted and Majestic:

“And (for) their saying, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.’ But they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; rather another was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain. * Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And Allah is Almighty and Wise. * There is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him (Jesus) before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them.” [Surat-al-Nisa`a, 4: 157-159]

Another verse indicates the time when Islam will prevail over all other religions, which is at the second coming of Jesus peace be upon him, as will be explained in detail in the narrations. Allah the Exalted said:

“It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it dominant over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah in partnership detest it.” [Surat-at-Taubah: 10:33; Surat-as-Saff: 61:8]

The second coming is related to the fact that Jesus, peace be upon him, did not die as the Christians claims but was miraculously saved from death and taken up to heaven by Allah to remain until the appointed our of his return and descent to earth. This is mentioned in the saying of Allah the Exalted:

“And (remember) when Allah said: “O Jesus, I will take you and raise you to Myself and cleanse you (of the blasphemies) of those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute.” [3:55]

Jesus’ return peace be upon him, in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him,

The verses of Surat-az-Zukhruf have been explained further in a narration of the Ibn Abbas may Allah be pleased with him, when the Quraish tribe belittled the fact that Ibn Maryam (son of Mary) is mentioned as a Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, and furthermore that his descent be fore the Resurrection is a sign of the coming Hour.[1]

The verse from Surat-al-Nisa`a above is not a definitive text for the second coming and only an indication, and yet it has been explained more in the very explicit and authentic narration of Abu Hurairrah, may Allah be pleased with him, when he said that the Messenger of Allah said, peace and blessing be upon him:

[البخاري 3448]{ وَإِنْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا لَيُؤْمِنَنَّ بِهِ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيدًا }

“Verily by Him in whose hand my soul is (Allah the Creator) it will happen soon that th son of Mary will descend among you as a just ruler. He will break the crosses, kill the pigs, and abrogate the (payment of) Jizya. Wealth will become so bountiful at his time that no one will accept (charity). Until one prostration will be considered better than the entire world and everything in it.” Then Abu Hurairrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: Recite if you wish: “And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) but will believe in him before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.” [4:159] [2]

This is the most famous narration about the second coming and it makes clear the deeds of Jesus upon his return. The question arises, why will Jesus peace be upon him, break the crosses and kill the pigs? The answer is this will be the definite sign of his displeasure for the false worship of the Christians when they worshiped him and his mother instead of Allah.

One reason is that the cross is a Christian symbol of their deification of Jesus and it has traditionally always been with the Crusaders, and apparently will become a focal point of great battles between the Muslims and Christians, as the famous authentic narration of Dthee Makhmar, may Allah be pleased with him, relates, when he said that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“You will conclude a peace-treaty with the Romans and together you will invade an enemy beyond yourselves, and you will be victorious and take war booty. Then you will camp in a hilly pasture. One of the Roman men will raise a cross and say, ‘Victory to the Cross’ and one of the Muslims will become angry and strike him (killing him). Then the Romans will treacherously break the treaty, and there will be huge gathering for the Malhamah (great battle). They will gather an army against you and come against you with eighty banners, each banner followed by 12,000 men.” [3]

His displeasure will also be a sign of anger for their distortion of the laws of Allah since in the Torah revealed to Prophet Moses peace be upon him, and in the Quran revealed to Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him, we find that both decree that all pig meat and pork products are strictly forbidden as unclean.

The fact that the deviants have arrogantly legislated their own worship and law in derogation of Allah’s laws is an act of disbelief and idolatry by which they claim the right to legislate laws for themselves, whereas Allah is exclusively the Law Giver.  Allah the Exalted said:

“They (the Jews and Christians) have taken their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah and the Messiah, son of Mary, while they were commanded to worship none but One God:  there is no god except Him, (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Glory be to Him and Exalted far above the partners they associate (with Him).” [9:31]

The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, recited this verse in the presence of Edi ibn Hatim at-Ta`ee may Allah be pleased with him, who then said:

“I came to the Prophet peace and blessings be upon him wearing on my neck a cross of gold and he said O Edi remove this idol from your neck! I removed it and came to him as he was reading the verse ‘They (the Jews and Christians) have taken their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah…’ so I said, “O Messenger of Allah, we don’t worship them.” The Prophet said: “Don’t they legalize that which Allah has forbidden and made unlawful, and you also make it lawful and legitimate? And don’t they forbid that which Allah has made legal and legitimate and you also forbid it and make it unlawful?” He said: “Yes, certainly.” He said: “That is their worship of them.” [4]
