The First Session:

About the Virtues of the Month of Ramadan:

All praises be to Allah: Who nurtured and created; Who made the water and the dust; and Who originated everything and knows everything (omnisciently) without any detail being lost to His sight, not even the minuscule ant in the depth of night. Nothing escapes His Knowledge, not even the weight of an atom in the earth or the heavens.

(As Allah said):

{لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَـوَتِ وَمَا فِي الاَْرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَمَا تَحْتَ الثَّرَى * وَإِن تَجْهَرْ بِالْقَوْلِ فَإِنَّهُ يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى * اللَّهُ لا إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ لَهُ الاَْسْمَآءُ الْحُسْنَى }

“* To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and what is between them, and what is under the soil. * And if you speak aloud, then – indeed – He knows what is secret and what is hidden. * Allah: there is no god except Him. To Him belongs the Most Perfect Names.” [Taha 20: 6-8]

He created Adam, tested him with trial, chose him unto Himself, turned to him in forgiveness, and guided him. He commissioned Noah who made the Ark by Allah’s command, and the Ark proceeded (on its journey of salvation).  He saved al-Khaleel (the the Beloved One – Abraham) from the fire so that its heat became cool and peaceful upon him, so behold and take a lesson in this event. He bestowed nine miraculous great signs upon Moses, but Pharaoh did not take notice nor was he admonished. He gave Jesus miraculous signs that astonished mankind. He revealed the Book (the Qur`an) to descend upon Muhammad wherein are clear revelations and guidance. I praise Allah for the blessings that never cease in their abundance, and I send the salutation and prayers (of peace and blessings) upon Allah’s Prophet Muhammad who was sent to the Mother of all Cites (Makkah ), prayers be upon him, and upon his companion Abu Bakr who without argument was with him in the cave (during emigration), and upon Umar who is inspired in his opinions, which he sees with the light of Allah, and upon Uthman the husband of two of his daughters, a truth that is not fabricated, and upon Ali who is the ocean of knowledge and the ferocious lion (in courageousness for the truth), and upon the rest of his family and companions whose merits are all well known among mankind, with many prayers of peace and blessings, (we send out salutation).

O my brothers, the month of Ramadan has come upon you, a great time of year coming annually when Allah increases the rewards, and when gifts are given lavishly. The doors of goodness are opened wide for every worker of righteous deeds: a month of much good and blessings; a month of endowments and presents.

(As Allah says):

“* The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qu`ran, a guidance for the people, and the clear proofs of guidance, and the criterion” [Al-Baqara; 2:185]

Ramadan is a month full of mercy and forgiveness and release from the hellfire: the beginning of it is mercy; the middle of it is forgiveness; and the end of it is release from the hellfire. The virtues about Ramadan in the scriptures of revelations are well known, and they are reported reliably so there is no doubt about their validity. And in the two Authentic Books (Sahihain: al-Bukhari and Muslim), Abu Hurairah narrated, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said:

«إِذَا جَاءَ رمضانُ فُتِّحَت أبوابُ الجنَّةِ، وغُلِّقَتْ أبوابُ النار، وصُفِّدتِ الشَّياطينُ»

“When Ramadan comes the Doors of Paradise are opened and the Doors of Hellfire are locked and the Devils are shackled.”  The Doors of Paradise are only opened in this month for the abundant amount of good deeds, and to encourage the people to act (with righteousness). The Doors of Hellfire are locked for the negligible amount of sins from the people of faith. The Devils are shackled and locked away so they are not able to do the enticements to sin like they do in other months.

Imam Ahmad reported that Abu Hurairah may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“My Nation of believers has been given five things in Ramadan that have not been given to any other nations before them: the smell of the mouth of the fasting person is more beloved to Allah than the musk perfume; the angels seek forgiveness for the people who fast until they break their fast; Allah beautifies the Paradise every day and says, ‘it may be that My righteous slaves will have the hardships and injuries removed from them and they will come to you’; the wicked devils are shackled so that the people can be pure and sincere in this month more than any other; and they are forgiven on the last night. It was said: Oh Messenger of Allah, would that be Lailat-al-Qadr (the Night of Decree)? He said: No, but the worker only receives his rewards after the completion of the work.” [1]

Allah has preserved these five precious characteristics for you, choosing them especially for you from among all of the nations.  Allah bestowed them upon you, Oh my brothers, so that His favors upon you are complete? And how many favors and blessing are there upon you from Allah?

(Allah said):

“* You are the best of communities that Allah has brought forth from among the communities.  You enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in Allah.” [Aal Imran 3: 110]

The first characteristic:

The smell of the mouth of the fasting person is more beloved to Allah than the musk perfume. [2] The Arabic word “Khuluuf means the change of smell that occurs in the mouth of the fasting person on account of the emptiness of his stomach from food. It is a smell which displeases people, but is beloved to Allah, even more beloved to Allah than the musk perfume because its stimulant is worship and obedience of Allah, and everything that comes from the worship and obedience of Allah is beloved to Allah, the Glorified, and He will give the worshipper for it what is better, more perfect, and more pure. Don’t you see that the martyr, who has been killed for Allah’s cause so that the Word of Allah will be Supreme, will come on the Day of Resurrection with his wounds bleeding, having the color of blood but the smell of musk perfume? Similarity in the Pilgrims (Hajj), Allah mentions to the angels with pride concerning the people who stand (praying) at the plain of Arafat, for the Most Glorified says:

«انْظُرُوا إلى عبادِي هؤلاء جاؤوني شُعْثاً غُبْراً»

“Look at these slaves of Mine, who have come to Me with unkempt hair and full of dust (because of their journey).” This has been reported by Ahmad and Ibn Habban in his Sahih. [3]  Their unkempt hair is beloved to Allah in this case because it comes from obedience of Allah and restraint from the prohibited acts of the Hajj rites, including leaving off the grooming of that which grows on the body.

The second characteristic:

The angels seek forgiveness for the people who fast until they break their fast. The angels are noble slaves and worshippers of Allah, who, as Allah says:

{لاَّ يَعْصُونَ اللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ } [التحرم: 6].

“…they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.” [at-Tahreem 66: 6] They are worthy of Allah’s acceptance of their prayers for the people who fast, since Allah has permitted them to do so. And the only reason Allah permitted them to pray for the forgiveness of those of this nation who fast, is to raise their status, and to elevate their remembrance, and to clarify the virtue of their fasting. “Istaghfar” means to seek forgiveness, which is the covering of the sins in this world and in the hereafter, and granting pardon. This is the highest of stations, and the best of goals to achieve, for every child of Adam makes mistakes and transgresses against its own soul, and therefore, is in dire necessity for the forgiveness of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.

The third characteristic:

Allah beautifies the Paradise every day and says, ‘it may be that My righteous slaves will have the hardships and injuries removed from them and they will come to you’. Thus, Allah beautifies the Paradise every day in preparation for the righteous slaves, and to encourage them to achieve its entrance. When Allah said “it may be that that My righteous slaves will have the hardships and injuries removed from them,” this means the hardships of the life of this world, the tiring burdens, and unpleasant things, so that they will work hard to perform good deeds, in which is their salvation in this life and the Hereafter, to reach the (everlasting) Abode of Peace and Honor.

The fourth characteristic:

The wicked devils are shackled in chains [4] and locks so that they cannot do what they want to do with the righteous slaves of Allah; misguiding them from the truth and hindering them from doing good (by their temptations and enticements to evil).  This is a great help of Allah to the believers in that He holds back their enemy Satan who only calls his followers to be of the companions of the Burning Fire.  That is why you find that the righteous Muslims have more energy to do good deeds and to stay away from evil, in this month of Ramadan more than any other month.

The fifth characteristic:

They are forgiven on the last night of this month [5]  if they complete what is required of them in this blessed month of fasting and praying, as a gracious blessing from Allah, by bestowing His reward upon them when they finish, since the worker receives his rewards after the completion of the work.

Allah the Most Gracious has graciously bestowed His rewards on them in three manners:

The first manner: Allah has legislated for them that some righteous deeds are a reason for the forgiveness of their sins, and an increase of their status. If He had not legislated this for them it would not be right that they worship Allah by these worships, since worship is not determined except from the revelation of Allah to His Messengers. For this reason Allah rebukes those who legislate their own laws in derogation of Allah (and His laws), and Allah made this a kind of idolatry (Shirk: ascribing partners to Allah). Allah the Most Glorified said:

{أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُواْ لَهُمْ مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ وَلَوْلاَ كَلِمَةُ الْفَصْلِ لَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَإِنَّ الظَّـلِمِينَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ } [الشورى: 21].

“Or do they have partners who have legislated for them a religion which Allah has not permitted?” [Ash-Shura 42:21]

The second manner: Allah has bestowed His favor upon them allowing them to perform the righteous deeds, which many people have abandoned. If it weren’t for Allah’s special aid and His favor upon them, they would not have been able to perform them. For Allah is the gratitude and the kindness for (His Grace and Gift). (As Allah says):

“They consider it a favor to you, (O Muhammad) that they have accepted Islam:  say, “Do not consider your Islam to be a favor to me?  Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to the faith, if you are truthful.” [Al-Hujjarat: 49:17]

The third manner: He has bestowed His favor with bountiful rewards, for one good deed receives ten times its amount, up to seven hundred or even many times more.  So Allah bestows the grace of doing the deed, and He gives the reward. And all praise is for Allah.

O my brothers; it is an enormous blessing to be able to arrive to this time of Ramadan and to fulfill its rights by repenting to Allah, moving towards obedience away from committing sins, towards remembrance away from forgetfulness, and towards the return to Him away from alienation from Him.

O you, to whom it did not suffice to disobey Allah in Rajab,

Until he had to also disobey Him in Sha’ban;

The month of fasting has come after these months,

So do not make it also a month of disobedience;

Recite the Qur`an and glorify with earnest endeavor,

For it is a month of glorification and Qur`an;

How many did you know who fasted of those that proceeded,

Of the relative, neighbor and brother;

Death has made them all deceased, and you remain after them

alive, and how amazingly close is the farther away to the closer.

O Allah, shake us awake from our slumber of forgetfulness, and favor us to take provisions of God-consciousness before we move (to Death), and grant us to take advantage of the times, giving us respite (before accounting), and forgive us and our parents and all of the Muslims, Oh the Most Merciful of those that are Merciful. And may Allah give His salutations of peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and all of his family and companions.

[1]  Reported (also) by al-Bazzar and Al-Baihaqi in the book Rewards, and its chain of narrators is very weak, although there is supporting evidence for parts of it in the authentic narrations.

[2]  This has been reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim without the exclusiveness for this (Muslim) community.

[3]  This is Sahih (reliable), for the supporting evidence of other narrations.

[4] Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported this with the words  “ chained devils”, and Ibn Khuzaimah with the words “devils of the rebellious jinn,”  and an-Nasa`e with the words “rebellious devils.”  All these narrations are by Abu Hurairah without the exclusiveness for this (Muslim) community.

[5]  Al-Baihaqi narrated a narration of Jabir close to this, and al –Mundthar said: “the chain of narrators is close (to reliability) and better than what is before it,” meaning the original narration of Abu Hurairah.

More coming inshallah
