In the name of Allah Most Beneficent Most Merciful

All praise is for Allah the Exalted and may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon His Messenger Muhammad and his family and companions and all those who follow them and their way until the Day of Resurrection

Essentials of the ‘Umrah:

1. Ihram

2. Tawwaf

3 .Sa‘i

4. Tahliq or Taqsir

1. Ihram: to wear two un-sown sheets of cloth from the Miqat (certain places that signify the beginning of the limits of the Haram which has with it the Ka‘bah). (note semblance to burial shroud).

2. Tawwaf: to circumambulate the House of Allah the Almighty seven times. At the beginning of each round, one raises the hands towards the Hijr Aswad ( called Istilam)

3. Sa‘i: to walk vigorously seven times between the two hillocks of Safa and Marwah.

4. Tahliq or Taqsir. After Sa‘i, one is required to either completely shave the hair (Tahliq) or to have a hair cut (Taqsir). Women are required to remove a few strands of their hair only.

How to perform Umrah:

On Proceeding to Meeqaat and entering state of Ihraam recite

Here I am at your service Oh Allah with Umrah” When you have some fear of not completing the ‘Umrah, recite

“Oh Allah my place of removing Ihram is where I am held by You.”

Standing, face the Qiblah and recite

Oh Allah this Umrah without any showing off and without seeking just good speech about me.” Then start reciting “Talbiyyah” loudly over and over again in your journey to Makkah

“Here I am at your service Oh Allah, here I am at your service Oh Allah. Here I am at your service You have no partner. Here I am at your service. Surely all praise, blessings and dominion is Yours, and You have no partner.” [this is called Talbeeyah]. Upon entering al-Masjidul-Haraam right foot, recite

“By the Name of Allah, Oh Allah salutations of peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, and open the doors of you Your mercy.” Starting at al-Hajarul-Aswad 1, men only – uncover right shoulder by placing Ihraam underneath right arm-pit. When beginning each circuit, make a sign with your right hand towards al-Hajarul-Aswad 2, and recite –( اللَّهُ أَكْبَر) “Allah is Greatest.” and say

“Oh Allah believing in Allah and believing that the Your Book is truthful, and fulfilling my covenant with You, and following the Sunnah of your Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him.” Make seven circuit’s of Ka’bah 3 (for first three circuit’s only, men only – uncover your right shoulder and swiftly walk around the Ka’bah; Then begin fourth circuit, covering your right shoulder walking at normal pace completely around and finish until seventh circuit).

During each circuit, whilst between ar-Ruknul-Yamaanee and al-Hajarul-Aswad, recite

{ربَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَ فِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَ قِنَا عَذَابَ النَّار }

Oh our Lord give us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the Fire.”

Then go behind Station of Ibraaheem and recite

{ وَاتَّخِذُوْا مِنْ مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ مُصَلًّى }

“And Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.” Behind Station of Ibraaheem – if possible, otherwise anywhere within al-Masjidul-Haraam: Pray two rakaah naafilah;In first rakaah recite Soorah al-Kaafiroon and in second rakaah, Soorah al-Ikhlaas. Then go to Zam-Zam well and drink from it, then pour some water over head.

Return to al-Hajarul-Aswad and make a sign with your right hand towards it for the last time 2, and recite – (اللَّهُ أَكْبَر ) Begin Sa’ee at as-Safaa.

At foot of as-Safaa recite

وَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَيْراً فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيْم }

“Indeed as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj or Umrah to the House there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers to do good, then indeed Allah is Appreciative, Knowing.” Each time upon as-Safaa and al-Marwah facing Ka’bah, one should recite –

Allah is Great Allah is Great Allah is Great, there is no god except Allah Alone without any partner, His is the Domination, and the Praise he gives Life and Death and He is able to do anything (He wills) there is no god except Allah Alone without any partner, He fulfilled His promise and gave victory to His slave and defeated the confederates alone.”

– three times, making du’aa after first and second recitation only. Complete walk from as-Safaa to al-Marwah (one circuit), then al-Marwah to as-Safaa (second circuit) and continue for seven circuits, finishing at al- Marwah. Upon encountering green lights, men only – run from one light to other light. Upon leaving al-Masjidul -Haraam with the left foot, recite

“By the Name of Allah, Oh Allah salutations of peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, and open the doors of you Your blessings.”

Finally, men: shave head – best, or cut hair equally from all over head; women: cut one-third finger length of hair.
